Tempranillo
Tempranillo is a thick-skinned, deeply-colored grape variety that gives juicy strawberry, spice and leather notes to the great red wines of Rioja and Ribera del Douro. Its name is the diminutive of the Spanish temprano, meaning "early". This is a reference to the fact that this grape ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. Tempranillo is uncommon outside of Spain. It is often blended with garnacha, mazuelo, and graciano grapes to make a more full-bodied wine.
